Gay Surname
Although James Gay (1744-1819) writes about his early life in Scotland, Ireland and his journey to North America through his poetry (see link, below), attempts confirm his origins and his ancestors is pure speculation at this time. On the other hand, research using DNA (see Group 3: sub-Group G-6, G-13) suggests the GAY surname may have been derived from "Mac Giolla Dhe" ("Son of a Servant of God"), the name associated with an ancient Celtic or pre-Irish clan. Celtic-Irish lore identifies the pre-1000 AD location of the clan's ancestoral home as being in far northern Ireland (Donegal - Derry).
